The morbid side of me here...we found this very old cemetary, smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood - literally, its like a big empty lot between houses - grave stones going right up to the sides of the houses - and across the street, those houses have a view of the cemetary. Very crazy - see those bedroom windows - can you imagine as a kid, having an old cemetary right outside your window? Anyway, it seems the cemetary had been there forever and the neighborhood was built around it. Many of the markers went way way back - many babies and small children, back in the day when infant mortality rates were so high...But the odd thing, there were still some sites apparently held for family members still living...Again, can you imagine a graveside burial taking place just outside your bedroom window? Creepy....
Outside our hotel...
The infamous "wild ponies" for which the book "Misty of Chincoteague" was written.Better late than never, here are a few pictures from my work trip to Chincoteague Island (VA) a few weeks ago. A great place to retire!! The houses are the old victorian style homes with big wrap around porches - my favorite! Several enormous ones which have been turned into bed & breakfasts as well - just a very charming place. The island itself has a year round population of about 4,300 - and apparently swells to 30,000 during their peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Its a beautiful island - lovely beaches and a beautiful wildlife refuge. A great local dive bar too, which I should mention, called Don's Seafood - one of the few places on the island we made sure we visited more than once. :)
